Connect to Cambodia | |  When: Sunday, August 20, 6pm - 9pm Where: ACES at Hallam Lake, 100 Puppy Smith St. This event features Stand Up For Rivers and The Cambodian Children's Fund. Enjoy a slideshow presentation from Colorado residents who navigated the Mekong River in Cambodia on stand up paddleboards with Stand up for Rivers. The slideshow will highlight the serious threats to Mekong communities and environment. Scott Neeson will discuss his work in Cambodia as the founder of The Cambodian Children's Fund. A $20 minimum donation goes to The Cambodian Rural Development Team (via Stand Up for Rivers), to The Cambodian Children's Fundand to ACES. |
| Adult Summer Classes | | Thursday August 4- Friday August 5, 9am - 5pm In this two-day course we will explore the rich fungal flora of Colorado. With the expert guidance of mycologists Vera Evenson and Dr. Scott T. Bates, you will learn identification techniques, examine mushrooms and lichens in their natural habitats, as well as discover the incredible variety and beauty of organisms in the kingdom fungi. Thursday August 11 & Friday August 12, 1pm - 10pm This two-day course introduces the science of astronomy and the practice of skywatching. It includes interactive classroom presentations and activities designed to appeal to a variety of learning modes, as well as a nighttime orientation to the sky. Tuesday, August 8 & Wednesday, August 9, 12pm - 9pm This fully accredited, two-day class will help us rediscover the joyful learners in all of us! Participants of this workshop will explore the demands, needs, and wants of today's society and how it affects our educators. This class is not just for teachers, all are welcome and encouraged to participate! Monday, August 15, 9am - 5pm Tuesday, August 16 - Wed, August 16, 9am -5pm In this one day class you will make a personalized, simple hand-made book, with multimedia paper and a decorative cover, hand-sewn with a Coptic stitch. Put your journal to use right away! Maria is also teaching The Art of Field Sketching, a two-day workshop the day after! A field journal is an ongoing record of field sketches and observations over a period of time, and becomes your own textbook for studying the natural world. |
| Kids Summer Classes | | Hallam Lake August 1 - August 5, 9am - 3pm Ages 8 - 10 Turn close-up observations into amazing pieces of art during this hands-on workshop. Mornings are spent learning about a specific animals and nature facts so you can get your artistic juices flowing in the afternoon. August 2 & 3, 9:30am - 3:30 pm, Ages 8-12 Imagine what Snowmass looked like during the time that the ancient, large mammals found at Snowmass roamed through our mountains. Put your hard hats on and become a paleo-ecologist for a couple of days to unravel the mysteries of long ago.
August 4, 9:30 - 3:30, Ages 9 -11 The Aspen Idea of connecting body, mind and spirit is an underlying theme of the people in this valley. Go a step further and add all living creatures to this notion - The ACES Idea! Please join ACES director Tom Cardamone who will lead you on this intuitive sensory exploration of wild things.
Learn basic navigating skills you can use your whole life! This hands-on experience focuses on compass use, maps, and the natural landscape. Rock Bottom Ranch August 1 - 5, 9am - 1pm, Ages 5-6 Our little ducklings will get to learn the ins and outs of animal care at Rock Bottom Ranch. Adventure into the woods to collect supplies for fort building and later work in the garden and have lunch parties of homemade bread and butter! August 3 - 5, 9am - 3pm, Ages 11 - 14 Test your wilderness survival skills during this fun-packed camping trip! Learn the ethics of Leave-No-Trace-Camping, make rope from wild plants, and become an expert shelter architect and then depart for an adventurous camping trip on Basalt Mountain.
