| | Practical Beekeeping
Series May 12: Reading a Hive Learn how to
judge
the strength of your hive by
checking the brood patterns, numbers of
bees, stores and how the hive is progressing. We will also discuss how
to know when, or if, you should super your hive.
May 26: Hive
Dynamics Want to keep your hive
healthy? This class will give insight into
identifying problems such as a weak or failing queen and how to remedy
them.
Eco-Gardening Series May 15: Building Garden Beds Want to build a garden bed in your backyard? Join us to learn the
basics! In this hands-on workshop, we will explore permacutlure and
garden design, identify various garden building styles (rows, raised
beds, sheet mulch), and build our own!
May 29: Companion Planting Let the
garden do the work! Learn about different planting combinations
to maximize the resilience and productivity of your garden system. Come
sow seeds with us and discover which plants grow well together, and
which do not.

Maroon Corps Project at ACES

 Due to the
weather, we have decided to reschedule this volunteer day at Hallam
Lake. So join us on May 15th to help build a new teaching space in the
old ACES donkey pasture. This new space is greatly needed and will be
used all year long for hands-on environmental education!

ACES Apprenticeship

and College Students
Application
deadline: May 15th!
This
apprenticeship is designed to introduce high school and college
students to environmental education and environmental studies careers by
apprenticing at the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies. Students
will
assist in teaching environmental education programs, read and discuss
articles, write daily journal entries, conduct individual research, and
create a portfolio of work. This apprenticeship is in the approval
process for 1 undergraduate credit with Adams State College.

Tibetan Odyssey

Join
us at Hallam Lake for a special performance by acclaimed Tibetan
musician, Jamyang Yeshi, followed by a screening of the film, Shining Spirit: The Musical Journey of
Jamyang Yeshi, a story about the power of music and a Tibetan
family separated by politics and geography.
Jamyang was born
into a nomadic family in the Amdo region of Tibet. In 1998, the young
musician escaped across the Himalayas to Dharamsala, India and later
sought refuge in Canada. Jamyang has performed for His Holiness the
Dalai Lama, Richard Gere and Robert Thurman, and Prince Charles among
others. The film was a finalist at the 2009 Banff Mountain Film
Festival. The event is presented by the Tara Cafe Project and sponsored
by ACES and the Aspen Buddhist Community.

Happy 20th Anniversary to Earth Knack!

ACES congratulates Earth Knack for 20
years of fantastic programming and the cultivation of unique
experiences. Earth Knack has been offering primitive skills courses and
wilderness treks since 1990. The Earth Knack school site is near
Crestone, Co.
Robin Blankenship, Rock Bottom Ranch's manager,
owns and operates Earth Knack and has been working in the outdoor field
since 1978.
Earth Knack will be celebrating their 20th
anniversary on June 17-22, in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of

Wildlife & Conservation in East Africa

Join Mark Ross, founder of the Kolunga Village
Foundation for a slideshow about his work to creating and
implementing sustainable projects as identified by Kolunga village
residents that provide education, better health, and general
well-being. The foundation is leading a climb up Kilimanjaro in
late October to raise awareness of
Kenya development issues, and raise money for the foundation's projects
with Luo tribe on Rusinga Island, Kenya.
