Comments:

Today's destinations took us to the following Montane habitats: riparian, cottonwood riverbottom, conifer forest, aspen forest, mountain shrubland, and oak shrubland. Highlights of the day included a visit to a large heronry in the Woody Creek area with many active nests, a pair of ospreys at Hallam Lake, a female Black-chinned Hummingbird in cottonwoods along the Roaring Fork River, Lewis's Woodpeckers in Woody Creek, and a visit to Ziegler Reservoir with guest visit by Tom Cardamone. At Ziegler Reservoir we explored the Pleistocene habitats that once existed at that site and the avifauna that were documented by the Snowmastodon Dig. Tom explained that fossils recovered by the dig included a rosy finch, a crane, a wading/shorebird, four species of ducks, and a goose. This provided a unique habitat experience as part of our series. Join us for more excellent birding and special access on July 6th for the final outing in this series, covering habitats from North Star Nature Preserve to the top of Independence Pass!
