The first couple weeks of June tend to be the busiest weeks of the season for agricultural production (and everything else) at Rock Bottom Ranch! We are harvesting the first rounds of outdoor cool season crops (salad, arugula, root vegetables, greens, etc.), planting outdoor warm season crops (squash, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.), and seeding the fall cool season crops.

Another wet week at the Ranch challenged our vegetable schedule yet again. We must wait for dryer conditions to use big equipment like a tractor or tiller in order to avoid soil compaction, which decreases porosity. Luckily, Harper and Christian were able to find enough of a break in the weather to make furrows and get the potatoes planted for the season!

Another wet week is great for the pastures (as well as for the high elevation snowpack), however it poses some challenges for our outdoor vegetable production plans. Our growing schedule called for soil work, transplanting, and direct seeding this week, but the saturated ground has forced us to delay some of these projects.

This week we hosted one of the most exciting events of the year at Rock Bottom Ranch – the first ever Family Farm Feast with Savour the Mountains and the Oppenheim family. This event was a celebration of local food, healthy eating, and family. We searched the Roaring Fork and North Fork Valleys for the best local food products to bring together for an evening focused on teaching the whole family about where our food come from.
