It’s summertime at the Ranch and we are packing in as much agriculture work as daylight will allow. The plants are responding well to the long days and warmer weather. The tomatoes in the climate-battery hoophouse are reaching the top of the trellis and we are seeing a good amount of fruit set.  The Red McClure potatoes are reaching for the sun and putting on more and more growth every day. The lettuce is growing so quickly now that we are taking several cuttings a week.

The first Rock Bottom Ranch Farm to Table Dinner of the 2014 summer season was held last Friday, June 27th and was quite an amazing evening. These dinners are a celebration of local food producers, food artisans, and the Roaring Fork Valley community. We were fortunate to have a beautiful evening to meet members of the local food community and enjoy their products

There are several essential components of a local food system and one of the most important has been forgotten by most eaters in this era of modern food production – the processor.  As little as fifty years ago, small, family-owned meat processing facilities existed in nearly every county of the United States. These small businesses were a valuable resource in the community and played an integral part of the food system, converting animals into meat.

While projects have been moving at a very fast pace for the last several weeks, it is also important to realize that agriculture is a slow process. It takes a lot of observation, planning, record keeping, and patience to get quality agriculture products to the table.

Another productive week is behind us.  A large focus over the last few days was getting the Rolling Thunder hoophouse in position to start growing vegetables.  If you missed it, please read Christian’s blog post on April 24th to learn more about this style of hoophouse.

There’s an old Colorado saying that goes, “If you don’t like the weather, wait five minutes,” and that has been true this past week. We observed temperatures in the high 70’s last week, shortly followed by several inches of rain, two inches of snow, and low’s in the 20’s earlier this week. The dramatic change in the weather is handled pretty well by most of the animals on the farm and the hoophouse gives the vegetables lots of protection from swings like this.
