It has been an interesting observational year for our vegetable production. We have converted nearly an acre of pasture into annual vegetable and culinary herb production, which has been a thrilling accomplishment in itself. Yet with any new growing space, we quickly figure out the high and low spots, rocky locations, nutrient deficient areas, and sections with drainage challenges.  There are certain areas in our garden where these differences in soil quality are almost night and day.

As agriculture assistant at Rock Bottom Ranch, I am constantly thinking about what it takes to grow healthy, delicious veggies, and care for our many animals. One crucial aspect is the support from our sustainability conscious and generous community!

As the end of April draws near we have begun running from project to project. The budding willows and aspens are a reminder of just how close we are to the summer season. Earlier today, the first new goslings of the season were spotted in the front pasture! Transition time is here.

No more classrooms! No more grades! It’s summertime at Rock Bottom Ranch!

For the majority of the year, ACES educators work within Colorado’s state science standards to create programming that supports science curriculum in elementary schools. Field programs are focused, orderly, and run like clockwork in order to get students back on the bus at the pre-arranged time. Although educators love to allow students to freely explore, there is rarely time for that luxury.
