The Ranch’s new honey bees are in their new homes and settling well. It was quite an adventure to get them, so we’re relieved that the installation of the bee nuc and subsequent inspections have been smooth and successful. The Agriculture staff at the Ranch is pretty excited for this new endeavor – we are all beginner beekeepers, but enthusiastic nonetheless!

After a string of unplanned events, minor delays, and a broken truck, things finally began to come together last weekend ahead of a busy week at ACES at Rock Bottom Ranch. This week, we have a full plate - installation of a new pizza oven, juggling vegetable soil prep and planting, and, perhaps most excitingly, introduction of new beehives.

Monday, December 21st was the winter solstice, marking the longest night of the year. From this point forward, until the summer solstice in June, the days begin to get longer. This time of year an old farmer friend of mine always notes, “summer is just around the corner.”

Excitement about Energy Efficiency at Rock Bottom Ranch

The word “energy” has been buzzworthy around ACES at Rock Bottom Ranch lately. This is due in part to significant clean energy upgrades underway at the Ranch, as well as the fourth grade Energy Unit that ACES Educators are currently teaching in the ACES Ed classrooms at Basalt and Crystal River Elementary schools.

We are excited to announce that tomato season at Rock Bottom Ranch is just around the corner! In fact, Fourth of July marked the first ripe Sungold cherry tomato of the season (which mysteriously ended up in my mouth).

The first couple weeks of June tend to be the busiest weeks of the season for agricultural production (and everything else) at Rock Bottom Ranch! We are harvesting the first rounds of outdoor cool season crops (salad, arugula, root vegetables, greens, etc.), planting outdoor warm season crops (squash, peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.), and seeding the fall cool season crops.

We have been playing mother duck for the past 28 days, and it has finally paid off! Twelve little duckings hatched out of our incubator this Thursday.

Another wet week at the Ranch challenged our vegetable schedule yet again. We must wait for dryer conditions to use big equipment like a tractor or tiller in order to avoid soil compaction, which decreases porosity. Luckily, Harper and Christian were able to find enough of a break in the weather to make furrows and get the potatoes planted for the season!
