This week we hosted one of the most exciting events of the year at Rock Bottom Ranch – the first ever Family Farm Feast with Savour the Mountains and the Oppenheim family. This event was a celebration of local food, healthy eating, and family. We searched the Roaring Fork and North Fork Valleys for the best local food products to bring together for an evening focused on teaching the whole family about where our food come from.

It has been an interesting observational year for our vegetable production. We have converted nearly an acre of pasture into annual vegetable and culinary herb production, which has been a thrilling accomplishment in itself. Yet with any new growing space, we quickly figure out the high and low spots, rocky locations, nutrient deficient areas, and sections with drainage challenges.  There are certain areas in our garden where these differences in soil quality are almost night and day.

Farmers around the country may be the only people that begin planning for Thanksgiving dinner in the middle of July, but in order to get enough veggies and turkeys to everyone’s table on November 27, we need to plant seeds and hatch birds amidst the heat of midsummer.

Farm to Table for the Kids!

Posted in Ranch Report

It's not everyday you see someone (an 11-year-old no less) asking for more vinaigrette when their plate is already licked clean. This was just one of the things that pleasantly surprised me last week while teaching ACES Farm to Table 101 kids class at Rock Bottom Ranch. We had extra homemade vinaigrette after we dressed our salads from the garden and I was wracking my brain for what to use it for -- if only we had made bread, too! Turns out it doesn't matter, the kids were happy to have seconds of vinaigrette without the salad: "Ohmygosh, YUM!! We have extra?? Can I drink it??"

It’s summertime at the Ranch and we are packing in as much agriculture work as daylight will allow. The plants are responding well to the long days and warmer weather. The tomatoes in the climate-battery hoophouse are reaching the top of the trellis and we are seeing a good amount of fruit set.  The Red McClure potatoes are reaching for the sun and putting on more and more growth every day. The lettuce is growing so quickly now that we are taking several cuttings a week.

The first Rock Bottom Ranch Farm to Table Dinner of the 2014 summer season was held last Friday, June 27th and was quite an amazing evening. These dinners are a celebration of local food producers, food artisans, and the Roaring Fork Valley community. We were fortunate to have a beautiful evening to meet members of the local food community and enjoy their products

As agriculture assistant at Rock Bottom Ranch, I am constantly thinking about what it takes to grow healthy, delicious veggies, and care for our many animals. One crucial aspect is the support from our sustainability conscious and generous community!

The first week of the Basalt Sunday Market was a wonderful success and a refreshing reminder of the vibrant and growing local food and artisan community that surrounds us.
