Potbelly Perspectives

Seeking Balance & Finding Adventure Through Skiing in Kyrgyzstan

More than a year ago, Marian decided she wanted to go on a real ski adventure to somewhere far away and little-explored. She also wanted to combine her passion for raising environmental awareness with her passion for skiing and adventure. She set out researching potential destinations and recruiting others to join.

After several months of research, Marian and two other female skiers from New Zealand decided upon Kyrgyzstan as their destination, specifically the At-Bashi range in the southeast: an area littered with unclimbed or skied peaks. It’s also a very undeveloped area, with more than 50% of the population living below the poverty line as nomadic subsistence farmers. Climate change has drastically affected this area and this traditional way of living.

Marian heads to Kyrgyzstan in January to attempt a challenging 8-day ski traverse of the At-Bashi range and to explore the surrounding villages, investigating the effects of climate change on these mountain communities. She’s excited to share this adventure with her home mountain community upon her return and hopes to inspire others.

“The world’s poor, though least responsible for climate change, are most vulnerable and already suffering its impact.” - Pope Francis
