Natural Building Series

with Aspen TREE
Build with your own hands!
In this Series, participants will learn about different natural building techniques: straw bale, light straw clay, cob, rammed earth, and adobe brick while actually constructing a traditional earthen bread oven. After the series, participants will have the skill set to build their own mud structures at home using the MOST local of materials...Talk about green building (or maybe brown building?)!
This class is designed as a series to get the most out of this experience.

Basics of Mud - July 31, 12 pm - 4pm
Step in and Get Dirty! In this workshop, we will learn about the various mud building techniques, when each technique is appropriate, and how to find ideal mud conditions for building. You think getting muddy is only for the kids? Well, you'll get to answer that when you roll up your sleeves to make some adobe bricks.

A Muddy Foundation - August 7, 12 pm - 4pm
Literally from the ground up! Join us as we lay out a foundation from the bricks we prepared. We will review mud tests from our previous week and start working on the first coat of our up and coming earthen oven!

Form and Function - August 14, 12 pm - 4pm
Our oven takes form! In this workshop, participants will shape the dome of our oven, discover the value of insulation and thermal mass, and finish a second coat.

Finish it Clean! - August 21, 12 pm - 4pm
Mud becomes beautiful! Students will learn about finishing coats, mud sculpturing, and finishing touches. Yes, you may take the photos and show them to your friends!!!

We did it! Garden Pizza Party - August 28, 12 pm - 4pm
Form follows function! let's test out the oven! In this last workshop we will recap our building steps so that you can begin your own muddy creations.
Stay a while! From 5pm on the students of the Natural Building series will join students from the Eco-Garden series and Camp ReGeneration to create a bountiful meal from the garden using our new masterpiece - the naturally built traditional earthen bread oven! We did it!!

WHAT TO BRING: Bring work/gardening gloves, water, sun hat and appropriate clothing and shoes. Bring enough food and water to get you through the class. Bring anything else that you think is essential for a great day of working at the Ranch! We recommend long sleeves - sunshine and bugs are in abundance at RBR!

HOW TO GET THERE: Please bike, ride your horse, carpool, or paddle down the river to RBR whenever possible. In the Summer of 2009 we started to award most dedicated alternative transportation users and we'll keep doing it! We will set up 2010 Bike Board Challenge again - jump on your bike and ride down Rio Grande Trail to join the fun!
