Practical Beekeeping: Intro to Beekeeping

The buzz about bees!
Join us to learn how to successfully set up beehives including how to select a good location, proper hive inspection, how to feed bees and how to avoid swarms by splitting hives.

Dave Storm and his family are the proud owners of Wild Bear Bee Farm, a local, all-natural honey operation that sells both commercially and at local farmers markets.  He operates around 200 hives throughout the valley successfully without the use of any chemicals.  Dave is pleased to be able to share with us the techniques of raising healthy bee hives while incorporating information based on the specific conditions of the Roaring Fork Valley.

WHAT TO BRING: Safety in Beekeeping- All beekeepers face the occupational hazard of being stung by their bees, even when wearing protective gear. In light of this risk, Rock Bottom Ranch requires all students dealing with the hives to wear a veil, long pants, closed-toed shoes, a long sleeved shirt, and gloves. Bring your own gear if you have it - RBR will have some to lend out if you don't. If you wish to purchase the beekeeping gear go to: http://www.mannlakeltd.com.

HOW TO GET THERE: Please bike, ride your horse, carpool, or paddle down the river to RBR whenever possible. In the Summer of 2009 we started to award most dedicated alternative transportation users and we'll keep doing it! We will set up 2010 Bike Board Challenge again - jump on your bike and ride down Rio Grande Trail to join the fun!
