Around the Ranch We have been playing mother duck for the past 28 days, and it has finally paid off! Twelve little duckings hatched out of our incubator this Thursday.

Around the Ranch Another wet week at the Ranch challenged our vegetable schedule yet again. We must wait for dryer conditions to use big equipment like a tractor or tiller in order to avoid soil compaction, which decreases porosity. Luckily, Harper and Christian were able to find enough of a break in the weather to make furrows and get the potatoes planted for the season!

Last fall, first graders at Basalt Elementary School became enamored with “Wormy,” the worm sock puppet that guided them through their soil unit in ACES Ed class. This spring, a caterpillar puppet named Crunch helped Kindergarteners at Aspen Elementary School with lessons in their insect unit. The students were thrilled to find that, just like the caterpillars they were observing live, Crunch the puppet also transformed into a butterfly! ACES educators constantly seek out new ways to make learning engaging and fun.

Around the Ranch With all the talk of fall vegetables among the agriculture team, you would think summer had already come and gone! We shared a laugh this week, when in the midst of all this spring weather we reminded ourselves it is time to sow seed for “fall” vegetables. Summer has not even arrived, but we are already planning its culmination! Yesterday, Christian and I seeded all of the cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, leeks, and kalettes that we plan to harvest in September and October.

2015 marks the fourth year ACES has tracked the seasons with repeat photography. It is so easy to forget what happened even just last year, and the pictures remind us of what previous years looked like. Couple the pictures with data, and a story emerges.

Around the Ranch Another wet week is great for the pastures (as well as for the high elevation snowpack), however it poses some challenges for our outdoor vegetable production plans. Our growing schedule called for soil work, transplanting, and direct seeding this week, but the saturated ground has forced us to delay some of these projects.

Around the Ranch There is so much new life on the Ranch at this time of the year. Aside from the thousands of new vegetable plants eagerly awaiting their chance to hit the ground, we’ve got newborn piglets, chicks, rabbit kits, and lambs. I personally am most excited about the new lambs and ewes that just came on to the property a few weeks ago. They are a unique breed called Katahdin Hair Sheep.
