Morning Birding at Rock Bottom Ranch Species List | September 3, 2019
Tuesday, September 3, 2019, 7:30AM - 10:30AM
Location: Rock Bottom Ranch & Rio Grande Trail
Black-throated Gray Warbler
Today's highlights included a spectacular show of kingfishers in several places at RBR, black-throated gray warblers on RBR property as well as along the Rio Grande Trail, and a couple of black bears climbing in the oak scrub whose presence was called out by alarming Woodhouse's Scrub-Jays. The bears were presumably foraging on acorns, and the jays' continuous calling brought our attention to the spot where the oak canopy was shaking vigorously, indicating the activity of large animals. The bears were one of our final 'birds' of the outing, seen from the parking lot and an exciting observation for all of us. The diversity of birdlife encountered today was a highlight in itself as well, and another interesting mammal sighting was a rock squirrel basking in the top of a chokecherry shrub. Join us next Tuesday at Hallam Lake!
