Summer Naturalist Hikes

ACES is currently able to offer guided hikes according to federal, state, and local public health orders.

Hike with an ACES Naturalist! Get to know more about the Roaring Fork Valley by hiking with a naturalist guide.  Meet us at one of our daily free locations, or reserve a private hike. Our guides know the area and have a wealth of stories and information to share about wildlife and history of the area.

Daily Free Nature Tours

ACES Offers free nature tours at Maroon Bells, Aspen Mountain, and Snowmass Mountain. 

Maroon lake: This short out and back stroll takes you along the shore of Maroon Lake at the base of the towering 14,000 foot peaks of the Maroon Bells. ACES naturalists will share stories about geology, aspen trees, wildflowers, and wildlife. This hike is suitable for all ages.


Our Green World Day Hike has it all; after a jaunt through the silver mining ghost town of Ashcroft, the trail wanders up along Castle Creek to wildflower meadows and spectacular big sky views. Experience Maroon Bells-type scenery without the big crowds. This tour includes a gourmet prefix lunch at the famed Pine Creek Cookhouse for $45. Prices: $60 per person ($30 under 12 years). $45 prefix lunch is charged separately through the Pine Creek Cookhouse. Meet your guide at the Ashcroft Ghost Town lot at 10am, have lunch at 11:45am at the PCCH, and expect tour to end at 2:30pm. Please email [email protected] or call 970-925-5756 to book.

These guided walks tend to have little to no elevation gain, shorter mileage, but plenty to see. These are great for families and friends looking to stretch their legs and learn about nature without breaking too big of a sweat with ease of accessibility. Explorative Adventures

These guided hikes will get the heart pumping with a bit of a challenge. Explore different ecosystems along the way. These hikes are great for families and friends looking to spend a couple hours outside with a bit of a physical challenge. Hikes: Hunter Creek, Linkins Lake, Weller Lake, Maroon Creek, East Maroon Creek, Crater Lake, Ashcroft River Run

Challenging Hikes

These guided hikes will get you sweating as you go up in elevation and cover several miles. Learn about the valley as you hike and take water breaks. These hikes are great for families and friends looking to have someone take them out for a physical challenge for 4-6 hours. Hikes: Cathedral Lake, American Lake, Hunter-Smuggler Loop, Lost Man

Six miles not enough? Looking for a full-day challenge? These options start early to finish before dinner to test you in high elevations over longer endurance miles. Hikes: Lost Man Loop, Midway, Cathedral Lake to Electric Pass

Details about our private tours:

Hire a Naturalist guide, available by the hour for your hiking or educational experience. Basic fees are $60/hr per guide, with a two hour minimum. A snack or lunch can be provided for an additional cost.

  • Cancellations made within 48 hours of scheduled tour may be charged 50% of the tour cost. Cancellations made 24-hours prior to or day-of scheduled tour may be charged the full amount of the tour cost.
  • ACES may be able arrange transportation at an additional cost depending on the location
